East Tennessee lost a true icon, David Ray Hughes,on June 19th 2025. David grew up in the mountains- hunting bears with his daddy, learning the hollers and rivers, shooting, fishing, tracking, farming with his grandparents, and loving nature. Like his hero, Davy Crockett, he valued his mountain heritage and all God's creatures. A master carpenter and artisan, David was a woodworker and considered the humble profession as a tribute to his faith in Jesus. In his later years,he lived as shepherd to his flock—Rachel, Mary, and Tigerlily. He is survived by his precious flock, his dog Rebecca, his daughter Rachel, sister Kay, and his Aunt Sis . He is beloved and respected by many friends throughout Blount county and the Mennonite communities in Tennessee. May the circle be unbroken. As David believed- there's a better home awaiting- in the sky, Lord, in the sky.
